An Interview with Ben's Mom

What is it like to be Ben's mom?

Well, ultimately the best job in the world. Sometimes though it requires a lot of patience, and it can be perplexing to try to figure out what Ben is needing now.

Does Ben remind you of his dad or you as a child?

I think all parents can recognize the amazing wonder of having a mini-you who is also so much like your spouse it is unbelievable. My mom was showing me photos of myself as a baby this weekend where my expressions are just like Ben's. Even the way he plays with toys--totally focused--is identical to the way I played. At the same time, he is so much like his father. He is intellectually curious and needy like Mike. He has to have new stimuli constantly and the toys he prefers now are for older children. He loves to be scared, and he is musical. Oh, and he needs less sleep than average, which would be from Mike.

How does he communicate?

We're working on sign language, but he just laughs at me as if to say "Mom, we don't need that. You know what I want." But I persist. His most clear communication is over the CD player--he will rock back and forth and look at it and then look at me to say "Please put a CD on." He has a whine for hunger, and a whine for tired, and usually a very animated whine for "please change this diaper." And a pitiful cry for "love, love, love."

Does he show signs of crawling? Or walking?

No interest in crawling. He will reach for things and roll on to his tummy from a sitting position but he doesn't roll over anymore. He did when he was younger. He still loves to stand and yesterday he took a step while I was supporting him. He still does "tummy time" in (my) hopes that he will crawl. I didn't so it won't be tragic, but I have always used that as my excuse for my abysmal ability in sports.

Does Ben have favorite people?

His Daddy. I'm a given, there for food and comfort. His grammy who sings to him--he asks her to do this by rocking back and forth when he sees her. And Grandpa, who lets him pull his hair.
